Being a Catholic in a communist and non-religious country can have you killed.
This is the harsh reality for Huyen Tran, a 29 year old who had to flee her Vietnam home.
She was threatened with a death penalty because of her brave attempt to protect the statue of the Virgin Mary.
“I just try to protect the statue of Jesus’s mother and I was assaulted,” she said. “I was given a hard time and I still have a scar on my head.”
Last year she sought refuge in Australia with her infant daughter Isabella.
Today she is pleading to the federal home affairs minister stay in Australia with her child Isabella to escape unlawful prosecution in Vietnam.
A crowd of protesters are supporting her plead outside of the court house.
